A2 Certificate of Competency

The GVC Drone Training Course is the training course that will teach you everything you need to know, and test your knowledge and practical skills, for you to earn your General VLOS Certificate in the United Kingdom.

About the Course

Unlike the PfCO, the GVC applies to all types of operations (whether for ‘Commercial’ purposes or not), but is based on the category of your aircraft, and where you are operating it. The GVC is a remote pilot competency certificate which provides a single qualification that is suitable for VLOS (Visual Line of Sight) operations within the Specific Category.

If you gain a GVC before the new EU regulations — which are currently set for a 31 December 2020 implementation — come into effect, you can use your GVC to apply to the CAA for a PfCO, and this will prove you have met the competence requirements.

After the course, candidates will be required to produce an Operations Manual and on completion will undergo a practical flight assessment with a flight examiner. Candidates will be asked to operate to their operations manual procedures.

The GVC is valid for a period of five years.

What to Expect

Ground School (2 days)

The drone training course starts with two days of ground school. The Course Study Manual contains all the information required to pass the theory exam, but during the ground school stage we will go over the important areas and ensure that you are fully prepared for both the Theoretical Exam and the Flight Planning Assessment.

On the ground school you will be taught by one of our instructors who all have years of experience as drone operators. This experience is unique to Consortiq and ensures you receive the best instruction available to help you gain your GVC.

The emphasis during this stage is practical application through case studies and discussion. We will see how the theoretical knowledge is applied to the real-world operations you will be carrying out on a daily basis.

Through a series of flight planning exercises, we will bring together all the theoretical elements and ensure that a good understanding of how they work ‘in the field’ has been achieved.

The ground school stage culminates at the end of day two with the Theory Exam. It is our objective to have a 100% pass rate of both this assessment and we will do our part to help you achieve the required standard.

Flight Assessment (1 Day)

The flight assessment can be done with reference to the handbook provided by Consortiq, or candidates can choose to bring their own reference material should they prefer.

Each candidate will be fully briefed so they know exactly what to expect and all efforts will be made to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere to bring out the best performance in everyone. The Flight Assessment should last no longer than one hour.

Upon the successful completion of the Flight Assessment, the candidate will be awarded the UAQ and will have the option to use it as a stand-alone qualification to apply to work under a pre-existing company operations manual or to combine it with their own operations manual and apply for a PfCO.
